Kuttisrank in 'Montreal'

Malayalam filmmaker Shaji N. Karun's 'Kuttysrank (Sailor of the Hearts), a film dealing with the identity crisis of a mariner, is all set to premiere at the Montreal Film Festival beginning on August 27. The ace director has made a return to filmmaking after a long pause.

Shaji's last directorial venture was Mohanlal-starrer 'Vaanaprastham' (The final dance) in 1999.

Known for his distinct narrative style, Shaji tells the story of a mariner and his voyages through the eyes of three women in 'Kuttysrank'.

Superstar Mammootty plays the central role of Srank' (mariner) in the film while Kamalini Mukherjee, Padmapriya and Sri Lankan actress Meenakumari appear in the female roles.

Produced by Reliance Big Picture and Mega production house in Malayalam, the film will be premiered at the Montreal Film Festival beginning on August 27, before its release in India.

Shaji considers 'Kuttysrank' a different film in terms of theme, story pattern and visualisation. "Set in 1950s, the film is adaptable to any timeframe. I believe cinema is a sculpture carved out from time. A real film will fit any timeframe, because it is the truth. It has no past and future and what it only has is the present," he said.

The film deals with the identity crisis of 'Srank', who operates a cargo vessel through the backwaters of Kerala. A traveller by profession, no land is ready to accept him as its own and he is always dubbed a 'Varuthan', a stranger.

Daddy very coooool......

Daddy cool Review:

Starring: Mammootty, Master Dhanajay, Richa Pallot, Biju Menon
Director: Ashiq Abu

The movie starts off quite grippingly and the introduction scene was simply superb..

So what's Daddy Cool all about?
In fact there is no big story line...
Antony Simon (Mammootty) is a lazy crime Branch Cirlcle Inspector. His wife Annie (Richa) is a mature, practical and sophisticated woman. But for their son Adi (Master Dhananjay) his father is a hero… more than that a dear friend. The first half mainly narrates the petite happenings in their life; meanwhile the second half is a bit serious which goes in an investigative mood.

The film is technically topnotch. Cinematography is excellent. Performances wise all laurels go to Mammootty. The role has been tailor made for him and has given his best. The little boy Dhananjay is not far behind. Looking her best, Richa also has executed her role well. Daniel Balaji has done justice to his character Shiva., so has Biju Menon.. Musically also the film is hummable, especially ‘Kadhayoru' is excellent of the lot.

Daddy Cool could have been a much better film had it not got a serious turn and tailor made twists in the second half. There are hardly one or two scenes that genuinely stir your emotions.

verdict: colourful entertainer

The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 is considered to be the first organized revolt against British rule and as the first step in India's struggle for independence. But more than half a century prior to that, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of the Padinjare Kovilakom of the Kottayam family, irked by the unpopular revenue policy followed by the East India Company in Malabar, threatened to cut down all the pepper vines if the Company persisted in revenue collection. A determined but futile attempt was made by the British to capture the Raja in his own palace at Pazhassi in April 1796.

Subsequently a proclamation was issued forbidding people from supporting the Raja, threatening confiscation of their property if they did so. In January 1797 the Raja's men launched daring attack on the security personnel stationed at Pazhassi, exterminating the entire party save one. In pitched battles fought over three days, the Raja's men using swords, spears, bows and arrows, overpowered the British forces armed with muskets. The British had to sign a temporary truce.

When the occupying forces broke the terms of the truce, the Raja revolted again, but by then the British had control over most of the south. The Raja, accompanied by his wife and immediate attendants, took refuge in the jungles. In 1804 the Raja's properties were confiscated and a reward was proclaimed for his head. Towards the end of 1805, the Raja was surrounded and shot dead by the side of a stream.

Hariharan, MT Vasudevan Nair and Mammootty, the people behind Oru Vadakkan Veeragaatha, an epoch making film that became a milestone in Malayalam cinema, are in the making of another epic, which is to hit the screens during the Christmas season. The film, which is being shot with a Pan Vision camera and exploits the latest technical advancements, has Mammootty playing the lead role of Pazhassi Raja. Tamil actor Sarath Kumar makes his debut in Malayalam with this film, playing Edachena Kunkan, the best friend of Pazhassi Raja.
